Review: Strong Hearts Café – Syracuse, NY

You didn’t think we’d drive all the way back home from Toronto without making a pit stop for some more yummy eats, did you? We’ve been to Strong Hearts Café before and we knew exactly what we’d be missing if we didn’t make a stop. Plus, I haven’t had a good milkshake in a looooong time, so we needed to fix that. Strong Hearts makes good old comfort food, sandwiches, delicious desserts and MILKSHAKES!!! So. Damn. Good. They’re so awesome... Read More

Food Review: Route 11 Potato Chips

I am addicted to these chips. The first time I had them was in the restaurant down stairs in my building and every time I went down for lunch I had to have them. It got so bad the restaurant said they weren’t going to carry them and I ordered a case from Route 11. They have select potatoes, peanut oil and/or high monounsaturated sunflower oil, dehydrated cane juice, salt, paprika, garlic powder, spices, natural smoke flavor, with not more than 2% silicon dioxide and soybean... Read More

Vegan Camping

Last year Lydia and I decided to buy a chalet-style pop-up camper, so we could travel, hike, bike, and not have to worry about finding somewhere to eat, no matter where we were. If we find vegan food at local restaurants, that’s great; if not, we cook our own. We could probably have put together a more simplified set-up for our tent, but we’re getting old and want a little more comfort while still kinda roughing it. We bring with us a combination of prepared and unprepared... Read More

Restaurant Review – Ithaca, NY

Mauro and I have been wanting to go to Toronto for several years now, for several reasons —it’s extremely veg-friendly, there are some amazing farmers markets with yummy artisanal eats, it’s the host to the largest Veg Fest in North America (3 whole days of vegan demos, speakers and vendors), because we just love Canadia and Toronto is only an 8-hour drive from us. So we packed up our camper (more on vegan camping on Mauro’s post, coming soon) and headed out.... Read More

You Say Tomato, I Say Let’s Make Sauce

I am not creative when it comes to food. I pretty much live by the myriad of cookbooks that litter the top of my fridge. I’m grateful to all of those adventurous cooks who write them and I admire them for that. I can make simple things without looking at these books, but I rarely venture out and try something on my own without being prompted to do so. Case in point—Lydia told me she signed us up for Vegan MoFo and my brain went blank. Now I have to get creative. So when the... Read More

Food Review: Populence Vegan Popcorn

I was reading an article about how Populence had created a vegan Sauvignon Blanc Kettle Corn. They are located in New York City with a storefront on 8th Street in Greenwich Village. All of their popcorns are vegan except Jalapeno Cheddar, which is not quite true. The Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc uses fining agents contains Micronized potassium casseinate (casein is milk protein), food grade gelatin, egg albumin and other food grade components. #gallery-5 { margin: auto; } #gallery-5... Read More

Food Review: Louisville Vegan Jerky Co.

I was listening to the Our Hen House podcast and they were talking about trying jerky from Morels The Vegan Butcher. They have since changed their name to Louisville Vegan Jerky Co. and you can like them on Facebook. As a former meat eater, jerky used to be one of my favorite snacks. I loved the spicy smoky flavor of beef jerky. There are also Primal strips, which are good, but are slimy and don’t really capture the texture and flavor of beef jerky.                                 I... Read More

Product Review: Biscoff Spread

Have you ever been on a flight and seen those white packages of cookies the stewardesses/stewards give to passengers when they’re taking drink orders? Well, those are Biscoff cookies. Did you know they’re vegan? I don’t know if they’re vegan by accident or by design, but they are. Did you also know there’s a spreadable version of said cookie? Yes, yes, cookies you can spread on bread, crackers and other cookies, and dip your favorite snacks into!... Read More
