We all have our favorite lunch spots, be it pizza or sandwich place or even a Chinese restaurant. My favorite spot when I was a vegetarian was Jules Thin Crust.
Jules has the best thin crust pizza, losing only to authentic thin crusts in Italy IMHO, made from mostly organic and local ingredients and toppings. It was my favorite lunch spot because they have so many flavors to choose from by the slice, it’s just pick up and go or choose a slice or two and enjoy the rest of your lunch break there. When I became a vegan I found myself going there less and less because, unless I ordered a whole pie with Daiya “cheese”, they only had a plain tomato pie on their line-up to get by the slice.
So when Jules announced their yearly pizza contest, earlier this year, I thought for sure I a had a shot at getting one of my vegan specialties in the finals. I merrily submitted 3 flavor options and a long letter on the importance of having vegan flavors on the menu and by the slice. And waited. Well, none of my flavors were chosen (such is life) and there was no response to my long dissertation either.
Those who know me know, obviously, my mission was not over yet. On one of my lunch outings I decided to vent my frustration to just the right person: Ngiare Mormon, Jules’ Doylestown store manager. She was receptive to my vegan requests and we corresponded back and forth with ideas. Mauro and I even had a face-to-face meeting with store owner John Ordway. Our meeting was extremely productive and positive, and was much more then we ever expected.
The results all our joint efforts are listed and pictured below. All four flavors are absolutely divine! Jules has 3 locations in PA (Doylestown, Jenkintown and Newtown) so please stop by one of them to try their yummy vegan creations.
Jules new vegan pizza flavors:
Vegan Vege 12 – vegan ricotta, lemon peper baked tofu, caramelized onions, edamame & lemon vinaigrette. Vegan Meat 4 – vegan cheese (Daiya), lemon pepper baked tofu, caramelized onions, portobello mushrooms, chives & lemon vinaigrette.
Vegan Vege 5 – organic tomato sauce, fresh basil, chopped organic tomatoes, garlic, oregano, chick peas, spinach & portobello mushrooms.
Seasonal Vegan – summer squash, Spanish onions, light base of vegan cheese, garlic and roasted red peppers, with a light topping of vegan cheese.
Vegan Pesto (not pictured) – just added with sliced organic plum tomatoes and fresh organic basil
Vegan Meat 8 – coming soon (not pictured) – vegan ground “meat”, vegan cheese (Daiya), black beans, jalapeños, cilantro, chopped organic tomatoes, organic tomato sauce & lime juice.
Update March 2013:
Jules has eliminated all but the two vegan pies above at their Doylestown, PA location (call the other location ahead of time to verify if they still offer them). You can convert any pizza on their menu to a vegan version by eliminating all animal products and adding Daiya cheese. Some of the pies will then become dry and bland, so you’ll have to be creative and add more veggie toppings. This is a true shame, since we worked so hard to have those flavors added and they were so delicious.
